Royal Brunei Airlines mulls resuming BruneiKuching route next year

KUCHING, Oct 2: Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA) is considering restarting the Brunei-Kuching-Brunei route, which was suspended five years ago.

Its chief executive officer, Karam Chand, said his office was discussing with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture on the possibility of reviving this route by early next year.

“We had a meeting with Sarawak Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin and other stakeholders earlier,” he told a press conference here today.

Karam agreed that tourists would want to explore more than just Brunei itself; hence, RBA would do joint-promo packages with Sarawak.

Sarawak has been trying very hard to promote tourism through direct flight arrangements between Kuching and overseas destinations with several airlines in the past.

Lee said the state government was very happy to work with RBA and would look into all possibilities to make tourism a successful part of the state’s economic growth.

“Apart from direct flights to Kuching, we have good road connectivity linking Miri with Brunei. It would be good for RBA to look into the possibility of coming up with packages for tourists to visit Miri,” he said.

He observed that Brunei was getting a lot of tourist arrivals from China, and the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) would do joint collaborations with RBA to bring these tourists to Sarawak.
