KUCHING (July 18): Startup Borneo and Himpunan Pengusaha Muda Indonesia Kalimantan Barat (HipmiKalbar) yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to empower businesses and entrepreneur development on the Borneo island.

The exchange of MoU ceremony which saw Startup Borneo represented by chairman Abdul Qaiyum Alidin and HipmiKalbar represented by Denia Yuniarti Abdusamad, was held in conjunction with Startup Borneo’s second series of its Pre Pitching event.

Present to witness the exchange of MoU was Malaysian Productivity Council (MPC) chairman Datuk Abang Karim Tun Abang Openg.

When speaking at the event, Abang Karim said the MoU offered a new platform for entrepreneurs from Borneo to establish ties despite being separated by borders.

“There should be no differences as we are all staying on the same island. Ideas from both sides need to be transmitted and exchanged,” said Abang Karim.

He further elaborated that such collaboration should not be limited to just the economic aspect but other areas as well such as cultural exchange.

“Startup Borneo needs to be lauded for initiating today’s (yesterday) programme, as it is a great venue to promote creativity and the spirit of entrepreneurship. At the same time this programme can become the catalysts towards powering the state economy in the future,” he added.

More than 20 entrepreneurs, designers and startup companies participated in the programme where they pitched their ideas and business models to the audience.
