SIBU: The State Transport Ministry will look to organise a technical lab to improve public transportation in Sarawak, its minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin said.
He told a press conference following a closed-door briefing with Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) personnel here yesterday, that his ministry is determined to improve riverine transportation in the state.
“As we all know, Sarawak is the land of many rivers. We have 35 gazetted rivers in Sarawak. Out of the number, six major rivers are in the
central region.
“Thus in central region, riverine transportation plays an important role in the movement of goods and the people. My ministry together with the SRB headquarters will seriously look into how to improve riverine transportation not only in the central region but throughout Sarawak,” he said.
Lee, who was on a familiarisation visit here, added that his ministry – created following a cabinet reshuffle in August this year – was still in the process of filling up various posts, but that a few key officers are already in place.
