KUCHING: Sarawak's digital economy strategy is now in the early stages of implementation, with various projects and initiatives being rolled out by the state government. Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said one early initiative was an online identification and authentication system called Sarawak ID, which enables the public to access and use the state government's online services. "The Sarawak ID is the first step towards a service-based, people-centric government. Twenty government services are now online and registered Sarawak ID users benefit from the flexibility and ease of access to these services. "In the near future, more innovative, personalised and seamless services will be introduced," he said when opening the International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak 2019 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching on Monday (July 8). KOTA KINABALU : The Faculty of Medicine and Health Science (FMHS) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) yesterday launched the concept of Bring Your Own Container (BYOC) in conjunction with the faculty’s annual Chinese New Year (CNY) Potluck and Celebration 2019. “BYOC is a unique concept whereby we encourage all the faculty students and staff to bring their own containers daily for their meals. In today’s CNY celebration, all lecturers, students and supporting staff brought their own containers to contain their food. We want to raise awareness to our faculty members and the nation that one plastic bag takes 500 years to degrade completely. Malaysia is the eight largest producer of mismanaged plastics in the world,” said Dr Yeap Boon Tat, deputy dean of Students Affairs and Alumni in a statement. “We…

KUCHING: Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah hopes that digital technology such as Virtual Reality (VR) will revolutionise the way the tourism industry operates in future. Speaking during the Beyond Paradigm Summit 2019 held at a hotel here last week, he said through VR technology tourists will be able to experience the destination of their choice even before making the trip. “This technology is especially helpful for elderly group of travellers who wish to travel to adventurous destination such as caves, underwater, mountainous areas and rainforest but are limited by their physical ability, health and age. Hence the VR technology would be able to give them the immersive personalised experiences as if they were there,” he added. During the event, Abdul Karim was…

Instead, it will be modelled along similar schools in other countries which have proven to be effective and successful, Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah has said. “Sarawak’s own special needs primary schools will not duplicate what the ministry had done – in fact, we’re doing something different entirely. “We’ve benchmarked the various models and practices from other countries, most notably from Australia. One of the key differences is the inclusion of sports elements. Given the chance and…

A visit to a longhouse or a village in the interiors of Sarawak will enlighten one on the lifestyle of the people in the rural area. Some are farming and selling their crops to make a living while others are working as labourers in the mining, oil palm, construction and timber sectors in a small town or ‘pekan’ to sustain their livelihood and support their families. Normally, the men are the breadwinners of a family while the women will take care of the household chores and their children. Some women will also support their families by bringing harvested crops and produces such as vegetables from farm to sell at the markets in nearby towns. The hardship of living life in rural areas has prompted the people to yearn for better…
