Dato Madani Sahari As a Sarawakian, I am aware that there has been decades-long limitation in bringing the automotive industry to Sabah and Sarawak, as the logistics factors alone make it seemingly challenging to set up an automotive manufacturing ecosystem. However, with the advent of technology and disruptions within the mobility sector, new opportunities have arisen for the people of Sabah and Sarawak. With the correct strategy, it is the right time for meaningful participation, with new comparative advantages now available for the region. MARii has long been working closely with the Australian government to develop numerous turnkey projects in electric mobility and advanced manufacturing for the benefit of Malaysians. Now, in the case of Sabah and Sarawak, an opportunity has presented itself. Firstly, the advent of online technology has…

SEPANG: The word “lifestyle” may seem out of place at an airport, but it is exactly what Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) aims to inject into its five international airports in five years. The country’s main airport operator is looking to revamp the commercial space at international airports in Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi, Penang, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching. In an interview with FMT, Mohammad Nazli Abdul Aziz, who is spearheading the commercial reset, said the exercise is about raising the standards of airport retail and realising the full potential of commercial space. “Look at other airports in the region like Singapore, South Korea and Hong Kong. Their average sales per pax (SPP) is at least two to three times more than KLIA’s,” he said. Nazli, who is also MAHB’s senior general…

CHOOSING the right course to study after secondary school is one of the most important decisions in life. With an array of courses available, the guidance of an experienced and knowledgeable education counsellor is invaluable after the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) examinations. Regardless of whether school-leavers are from the arts or science stream, it is important to select a discipline that matches interests. Malaysian Institute of Human Resource Management human resource adviser Geh Thuan Hooi said the programme of choice must be relevant now and in the future or graduates risk being left behind. “With the advent of Industry 4.0 where artificial intelligence (AI) will replace many present jobs, anything related to data analytics, information technology and robotics are good fields to venture into.…

Associate Professor Dr Fatimah Karii KUCHING: The Sarawak government has been praised for introducing its own sales tax for petroleum products. Stressing that economic growth is about strategy and bold decision, Associate Professor Dr Fatimah Kari of Universiti Malaya (UM) said Sarawak is actually deprived of the profits of the true value of its resources despite being at the top of the country’s social prosperity indicator by virtue of its position as an oil and gas producer. Despite having resources such as oil and gas, “the sharing of wealth that benefits the producer state was minimal,” she pointed out. She was asked to comment on the impact of Sarawak-produced oil and gas on the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), pointing out it is taken away by Putrajaya which creates an “outwardly…
