To awake from slumber, “Awakenin9” is the chosen title for this art exhibition hosted by Kelab Jiwa Seni 9Lives Kuching, happening on 12th till 27th January 2019. This two-week event will be held at HAUS 1.5, Lot 4759, City Square, Section 64 Kuching Town Land District Phase 2, Jalan Pending, Kuching; an up-and-coming creative hub.
Awakenin9 is the first art exhibition in 2019 for Kelab Jiwa Seni 9Lives Kuching and will be facilitated by a collective of talented Sarawakian artists, plus collaborations with international art enthusiasts. Participating artists include Amy Amin, Asyilah Tan, Dean Caveman, D2k, Felix Oz, Monsthor, Keds, Rikai, Ishamuzen, Lisa James, IVXX, Tha Black Cat, and Yasmin Zaidi.
Happening simultaneously with the art exhibition, visitors may also participate in various art workshops where they can learn to make henna art, digital art, silkscreen printing, writing graffiti, and making tie dyes on fabric. There will also be a sharing session regarding digital art and discussions of post-colonial art with anthropologist Asmus Rungby, from Denmark.
To quote Husni Zuhairin, the founder of 9Lives, “We must and will keep on improving ourselves if we wish to succeed. With this art exhibition, it is truly the time to awaken and open our eyes to see the hidden talents in our local community, each with their own standards.”
He added, “We should listen and understand what drives people to appreciate art, and be more open to gain more knowledge through discussions and sharing sessions during the workshops.”
Kelab Jiwa Seni 9Lives Kuching was founded in 2014 with their main mission: to create a platform for young artists in Sarawak, and for them to gain confidence in their art. Apart from art exhibitions, this club is also active in making murals. They collaborated with Dewan Bandaraya Kuching Utara for their first mural project in 2014 at Jalan Budaya. They did the #TanahAirku murals at Jalan Carpenter with Petronas in 2015, and MYfm’s mural for #HOPECOURAGESTRENGTH at The Spring, Kuching the same year. In 2017 and 2018, 9Lives represented Sarawak to participate in the Borneo Arts Festival, which were held in Labuan.
This art exhibition, Awakenin9 is open to all ages and suitable for all artists and art enthusiasts.
