SARIKEI: Two groups from SMK Tinggi Sarikei won gold medals during the 3rd World Young Inventors Exhibition (WYIE), held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from May 2 to 4 this year.
Their inventions ‘Bamboo Shoot Peeler’ and ‘Flexy Sock Aider’ won two gold medals in the industrial design category.
According to the school’s principal, Ting Sing Teck, their two teams comprising 15 students were among eight teams from Sarawak competing against teams from 21 countries including China, Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Thailand, .
“This competition was organised by the International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition Malaysia,” he said.
“It served as a platform to develop 21st century thinking skills such as creativity and critical thinking, encourage Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTs) and promote learning of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) among students, in line with the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025,” Ting explained.
Touching on their winning entries, Ting said ‘Bamboo Shoot Peeler’ is a user-friendly device that can be operated easily to peel the hairy skin of bamboo shoots as the fine hair sticks onto our skin, causing itchiness.
A bamboo shoot is fixed onto the stand with adjustable claw to peel the hairy skin of the bamboo shoot. There are also stands to adjust the height of the device to accommodate the height of the users.
He congratulated the team members Lau Chiew Hong, Peter Wong Qin Chai, Lau Ge Siong, Bartholomew Lau Sie Xiong, Wong Ying Ying, Lau Yong, Rebecca Kiing Chi Eng and Dexter Ling Shi En for their victory which had certainly made the school proud.
Meanwhile, ‘Flexy Sock Aider’ enables people with mobility limitations and the elderly to put on their socks by themselves, he said.
Besides, it makes putting on socks easier as all one needs to do is just slip the foot into the socks by adjusting the angle either in a standing or seated position.
He also congratulated the inventors – Wong Soon Ping, Annie Lau Diew Feng, Lau Shyh Hung, Colin Ling Leh Ping, Vincent Tang Jung Xiang, Sherise Chin Sze You and Vvy Yen Zhi Ying – for their great effort.
“The school would like to offer their deepest gratitude to the teachers-in charge, Leong Siew Choon and Joyce Lang Tee Khin, as well as parents for their hard work, time and unceasing effort in making these two projects a success. Not forgetting the endless support rendered by the School Board of Directors, Alumni Association and Parent-Teacher Association. The school also hopes to bring out critical and creative thinking skills among the students, producing more innovative projects in the future,” Ting further said.
